PRATER SURPASSES HEALTH AND SAFETY MILESTONE
Building envelope contractor Prater has surpassed one million man hours onsite without a RIDDOR (Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 1995) as of 28 February 2010.
This is a fantastic achievement especially by a specialist trade contractor working in a high risk environment. In recent years, Prater has put in place a number of initiatives to protect the health and wellbeing of all its staff and sub-contractors, empowering the workforce to be more safety conscious.
In 2009, two major Prater initiatives hit the road, The Behavioural Safety Roadshow and the Near Miss Report Card.
“The Roadshow is designed to change the cultural thinking of Prater staff and all sub-contractors on all its projects,” comments Richard Unwin, Operations Director at Prater. “Our initiative is highly valued by clients and main contractors and this means the whole on-site workforce benefits as well.”
The Near Miss Report Card is also a very powerful safety tool which has a daily impact on safety thinking. All onsite project personnel are encouraged to note both safe and unsafe practices and observations, and submit them every day for review and action; they are collated weekly by the Prater site safety team and acted on, and the actions reported back to the project team personnel.
To demonstrate the immediate impact of the report cards, in 2008 there were a total of 50 reports, while in 2009, this rose to 9,240. 79% of these reports were positive observations of safety practices, 21% indicated precisely where the need was for improvement.
“We considered it imperative that both positive and negative observations were encouraged,” continued Richard. “It encourages worker engagement and, because of the excellent buy-in of our site teams and sub-contractors, we have reached this outstanding 1 million reportable accident free man-hours milestone – a real achievement.”
