Health & Safety
Everyone recognises that Health and Safety is of paramount importance. We believe it not only adds value to our business but, more importantly, creates a safer working environment for our employees and sub-contractors. We aim to be recognised as the safest building envelope contractor in the UK – and as of 28th February this year, we surpassed one million man hours onsite without a RIDDOR (Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 1995).
In 2004, Prater was one of the first contractors to introduce a policy of compulsory eye and hand protection across all of our sites and it is delivering real dividends with dramatically improved accident statistics. During 2009, we introduced The Behavioural Safety Roadshow across all sites. The aim of the roadshow is to change cultural perceptions towards health and safety so that all staff and sub-contractors are thinking about keeping not only themselves safe, but the whole on-site team. It is a scheme that is highly valued by clients and main contractors and has significantly contributed towards improving our health and safety record.
We manage all aspects of health and safety by employing two full time Safety Managers who together with our external safety consultants 4 See Risk, oversee our site teams, sub contractors and supply partners to ensure that we can evaluate and manage risk in the most appropriate way. Minimum monthly site inspections are carried out by 4 See Risk and our Safety Officers carry out full project safety audits against our OHSAS 18001:2009 accredited site safety procedures manual.
Our project teams regularly win highly regarded client Site Safety Awards which further underpins our commitment to on-site safety. Prater’s internal ‘Safety Shield’ is awarded quarterly to the project team which demonstrates the highest level of commitment to health and safety standards or goes beyond the ‘norm’. Since its introduction, the Safety Shield has not only created awareness of our commitment to safety throughout the company, but has made our project teams more determined than ever to maintain the highest of standards.
