Stansted Airport is the third busiest airport in the UK with over 23 million passengers travelling through the airport each year. When BAA was granted permission to extend the terminal building to help aid the increase in passenger traffic, specialist envelope contractor Prater, was seen as the natural choice to supply the total external envelope package for the £50 million project - having successfully worked with BAA at Gatwick and Heathrow on similar projects and the original terminal building at Stansted.
Prater’s role in the roof construction involved installing pre crimped Plannja metal decking overlaid with a vapour control barrier, acoustic matting, insulation and 7,800 Sq m of Sarnafil single ply roofing membrane which formed the 22 diagrid roof structure. These were supported on six support ‘trees’ – the roof structure designed to replicate the roof of the existing terminal building. Prater’s ability to pre assemble the main roof structure close to the site, dramatically reduced health and safety issues and installation time.
To complete the building envelope, Prater installed 2,258 Sq m of high performance solar glazing for the main external façade, the glazing being fixed to the primary steel work, 600 Sq m of rooflight glazing and 2,291 Sq m of composite cladding, for the low level areas of the building incorporating doors and aluminium louvres.
