Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth dates back to 1904 and was originally a military hospital – since then it has undergone many changes culminating in a PFI funded, £250 million redevelopment programme featuring a total envelope solution by Prater including a 20,000 Sq m off-site manufactured walling system.
To meet the design brief, sustainable energy targets and challenging timescales for the building envelope - set by main contractor Carillion, Prater teamed-up with Ruukki to provide an off –site manufactured walling solution which would allow the building to be delivered to specification, fully weather proofed, in the shortest timescale possible.
This had the added benefit of allowing internal works to commence at a much early stage than traditional building techniques, thereby greatly reducing overall programme build time and costs.
For this project, 75% of the pre-fabricated wall panels featured: Liberta metal rainscreen panels pre clad at the Ruukki factory, the balance being installed on site together with contrasting Terracotta rainscreen panels.
Further scope of works carried out by Prater included: installing a Kalzip standing seam roofing system, a Hydrotech Inverted roof and a range of Louvres and soffits.
