Prater realises striking Heathrow Terminal 4 façade design.
Heathrow’s Terminal 4 is being significantly upgraded with a new check-in extension featuring a striking glass façade and canopy. Prater was selected by Taylor Woodrow to develop a bespoke solution to ensure that the ambitious design by Architect 3D Reid could be realised.
With Taylor Woodrow (BAA’s Complex Build Integrator) and BAA’s design and technical leadership, Prater responded to the design brief with a proposal to build a value for money version of the proposed façade, in addition to the roof and walls construction.
BAA sought an appearance similar to the new south wing extension of T3. Prater’s façade solution brought the exciting concept to life and met the demanding technical and aesthetic goals for the project.
The project comprised a 25m deep x 180m wide glazed extension to the existing T4 building with a new 12m deep canopy to provide solar shading and weather protection for passengers.
Prater’s in-house design team worked closely with the project team and other suppliers to develop and engineer the installation which included a bespoke blast-enhanced glass façade and pre-manufactured roofing elements. Prater also sourced and installed the façade-steelwork, external composite wall panels and blast-enhanced doors.
