Overview Expand

Designed by Guy Holloway Architects, Elwick Place is a 100,000 sq ft leisure and restaurant development in the heart of Ashford town centre. Lindner Prater delivered an extensive façade and roofing package.

The development was designed to house several retail outlets and restaurants, including a new Picturehouse Cinema.

The roofing package included an inverted PermaQuik hot melt waterproofing system, insulation and paving, as well as paved finishes to the low level roofing and terraces. The main roof of the cinema features an Esha flex acoustic warm roof on a metal deck, with glazed rooflights utilised on both areas.

The façade package to the Picturehouse Cinema includes Schuco curtain walling to the main entrance and atrium, and steel access doors to the back of the building. The key focus of the building however is the bespoke gold, woven, anodised aluminium mesh, fitted to cursed steelwork to create a sculptural, articulated and softly tapering form. The meshed panels added an extra level of complexity for the design and installation of the main structure – Lindner Prater overcame this by collaborating closely in the early design stages with Lendlease, Guy Holloway Architects and the developer Stanhope.

Thanks to these mesh panels, the building appears a striking gold in the daylight as it catches the sun – then as night, the shopping centre is lit up from within, and becomes a beacon to the surrounding town.

Works have also been completed on a Travelodge on site, in which Lindner Prater’s specialist teams delivered a complete external envelope package including another PermaQuik inverted hot melt waterproofing system as well as a lightweight insulated open vented pressed aluminium rainscreen system, Schuco opening light windows and Schuco curtain walling.

Elwick Place is now completed and open for business, and consists of the six -screen Picturehouse Cinema, seven restaurant units, a new meeting an events space, a 58-room Travelodge, and a 280-space car park.
